Our History
1999 - Leaders of the consumer movement decided to form an organization to provide housing to persons with psychiatric disabilities. That group made the recommendation that we create a new entity to purchase and maintain decent, safe, affordable housing. The philosophy of this housing is that persons with psychiatric disabilities should be able to find and keep housing that is desirable and located in neighborhoods that are safe and accepting. Main Street Housing is just what it says it is: an organization committed to the idea that persons with psychiatric disabilities do not have to be hidden away on the back streets, that they have the abilities and rights to live on “Main Street.”

2002 - MSH purchased two properties in Washington County. Both properties are two bedroom duplexes that are located in Hagerstown, Maryland. All four units have been rehabilitated and are housing individuals and families with psychiatric disabilities to this day. One unit in particular provides a home for a mother and her son. MSH helped make it possible for this tenant to regain custody of her child. Keeping families together is an integral component of our Corporate Values. This is often difficult through traditional mental health programming that offers housing as part of their service delivery package. 2004 - MSH purchased and rehabilitated two properties in Howard County. Each property has the capacity to house three individuals and both are currently housing individuals. Click here to download a pdf file of pictures of the two properties.

2006 - MSH purchased two properties in Harford County and is currently involved in the rehabilitation process of both properties. As the rehabilitation process is nearing completion, individuals will be housed very soon. Click here to download a pdf file of pictures of the two properties. In addition to Harford County, MSH is purchasing a multi-unit property in Frederick County and is looking to purchase an additional property soon. MSH will begin rehabilitating these properties to offer decent, safe, and affordable housing in Frederick County.

In addition, MSH is in the process of merging with another non-profit called S.A.I.L. in Easton, Maryland. With this merger, MSH will be acquiring the 5 properties which S.A.I.L. owns and will then have the capacity to house an additional 20 individuals. New leases with the tenants that are currently living in the properties will be signed soon, which will make them official tenants of MSH’s new S.A.I.L. division on the Eastern Shore. After Frederick County and the S.A.I.L. merger, MSH will have properties in 7 counties and will have the capacity to provide housing for 46 individuals.
